I sometimes find myself questioning if my work is enough. With so much information out there (picture your LinkedIn feed), it’s easy to feel that we’re missing out, failing to stay up to date, or not bringing the latest and greatest to our clients/teams/organisations.
As I detangle this fear, what I come to realise is that it’s not just a way of looking at myself, but a way of looking at my clients and the world too. There’s a seed of doubt that what they have is not enough, that they need something more to be enough, that the world could be perfect if we just had….
What the never-ending knowledge treadmill overlooks is the wisdom of the place where we actually dwell. The profundity of our reality.
“Honesty is the outer diagnostic of our ability to come to ground in reality, the hardest attainable ground of all, the place where we actually dwell.“
David Whyte, Consolations
In any moment we can shift from a view of “not enough” to “already whole”, from a desire for perfect to a deeper embrace of the world. And from this deeper embrace, we learn to see what is rather than what should be. And when we can see what is, we can move with rather than against.
From this place my work is less about fixing or teaching and more about revealing and learning-with. Thomas Hübl describes revealing as creating space for light to enter. Light to see our reality, to discover new choices, to create new coherence.
Enough is where we already are.
Note: I think this is particularly relevant for L&D teams. We see newsletters, webinars, reports, and research on what our organisations need to be learning. And while we can take inspiration from these, our highest priority is revealing the organisation to itself. Instead of projecting an external perspective of perfection onto our organisations we can create space for light to enter and for new coherence to emerge.
We can learn with our organisations.
