The scatter plot of unlimited possibility

Akshay Kapur Avatar

The scatter plot of unlimited possibility is a view into how a coach walks into a session – open to all possibility.

Why not start there yourself?

During a coaching conversation, the coach discovers the client view has temporarily narrowed in on a single point – something they’re stuck on, a blocker, a stressor, something they’d like to fix, change, or grow.

The coach reflects exactly that point back to them, confirming that is in fact where the client finds themselves right now. And just by hearing that reflection, the client notices they’re looking at the situation in a specific way.

It may seem like the coach is reframing, but it’s actually the client.

And their grasp of the situation expands.

They zoom out, perhaps to associated points nearby, perhaps to a random point they hadn’t considered, or perhaps they begin to see the wider scatter plot emerge.

Here is where insight emerges – a re-cognition of the situation. Not just one possibility, but many.

Silence allows time for the client to process the larger frame.

Now the scatter plot of unlimited possibility is present for both coach and client!

It almost doesn’t matter where the client moves to next, because their sense of themselves and what’s possible has expanded. Leading to continued wondering.

Continued curiosity.

Continued exploration, well beyond the session.

Now the client gets where the coach is starting from, and begins to enter sessions with a larger scatter plot on their own.

Insights, reflections, actions, integration all happen faster.

Once you know it’s there, it’s hard to unsee. Now you know the scatter plot is always present, and that it’s your view that has momentarily narrowed.

The coach will always hold the scatter plot of unlimited possibility in mind, but if it’s ever-present, why not start from it too?

As an engineer (at heart more than practice now), the idea of a scatterplot of topic resonates with me. I’m curious how it resonates with others?
